Tournament Review – Round One Van Open Results

Round one of the 2011 Paine Edmonds Vancouver open tee’d off today at McCleery Golf Course in Vancouver where over 200 Pros and Championship Amateurs competed for over $65,000 in Cash and Prizes including a $10,000 first place Pro Cheque.  Langley Pro James Allenby of the Canadian Tour charged out in front today with an opening round of 64 (-7) to take a one shot lead over Canada’s #1 Ranked Golfer from Abbotsford Adam Hadwin who opened up with a round of 65.

Canada’s hottest golfer of late, Hadwin was interviewed after his round and commented that ‘Although I didn’t hit it great on the front nine, I did manage to get a few good lies from the trees and took advantage of them and made a few birdies.  Then I made a few good birdies on the back nine, making a few good putts.  Then I two putted the par fives, so overall it was a good way to start the event”.

“Life’s pretty good right now” stated Hadwin.  “I just need to keep what I’m doing over the next couple of months and hope to make my way onto the big (PGA) tour in 2012”.

The 2010 Van Open Champion (Hadwin) will look to defend his title over the final two days starting Saturday at Langara Golf Club where he will be paired with former World #1 Amateur Nick Taylor, #1 Ranked Canadian Club Pro Bryn Parry and 2010 World Junior Champion Adam Svensson.  All three had their struggles on the day as Svensson fired a 72, Taylor a 73 and Parry a 3 over par 74.

Former Canadian Tour regular and McCleery Teaching Professional Phil Jonas lead a charge of 3 Professionals in a tie for 3rd at -4 after shooting rounds of 67.

Heading the Amateur field after day one were Vancouver’s Hein Marcus and Port Moody’s Jun Kang, who both opened with excellent rounds of 68.

The marquee pairing of Hadwin and company will tee-off at 12pm tomorrow at Langara, while round one leader James Allenby heads to the tee at 11:30am with a Canadian Tour players Darren Griff (68), Darren Wallace (68) and Devon Carrey (69), all in the hunt for this year’s Van Open title.

Final round coverage will get underway at Fraserview Golf Course with top Professionals in the field hitting the tee between 12pm and 2pm.
